Tommy Mccann
Staff Optical Engineer @ MicroVision®
About
Reach out to me if you want to build something with optics. I have more than 10 years of experience with optics across Lidar, Mix Reality and Biotech. I have practical experience with all phases of product development. I have spent time working in the lab and with software tools such as Zemax, MATLAB and Python.

Experience

Optical Engineer
Intelliswift Software, Inc. @Meta
Redmond, Washington, United States
● Characterized performance of diverse 2D sensors used in human and machine vision applications for mixed reality product development through development and implementation of optical tests. ● Conceptualized and designed new prototype optical systems and components for MTF via single pixel illumination combining geometric or physical optics analysis in ZEMAX. ● Lead design and characterization processes for custom sensor metrology and measurement systems using Python automation and MATLAB analysis. ● Worked collaboratively with the Sensor team to manage code using GitHub.

Optical Engineer
Redmond, Washington, United States
● Designed and performed characterization and system performance testing under environmental conditions for the HoloLens augmented reality display. ● Worked in lab to integrate specialized optical and automated mechanical, and environmental control systems to address the unique challenges with measuring system level head mounted display performance within extreme military conditions. ● Assessed optical sources of error (alignment and color effects). ● Collaborated with internal cross functional teams and industry partners to optimize and verify optical performance.

Optical Engineer
Greater Seattle Area
● Acted as primary optical engineer for the biotech product portfolio of commercial optical test solutions for laser scanning fluorescence microscope for molecule quantification. ● Established optical specifications for lenses and mechanical position, including key performance metrics, optical manufacturing tolerances, mechanical and test requirements. ● Built prototype optical systems to test new optical components and designs including customized lasers, lens and lens systems; Avalanche Photo Diodes from different vendors and specialized multiband filters. ● Applied design for manufacturability (DFM) and optical and mechanical engineering optimization to improve spectral capacity and reduce footprint of first-generation product. ● Designed multi-lens microscope system combining off-the-shelf and custom parts in collaboration with external vendors.

Systems Engineer
Greater Seattle Area
● Developed an ultra-sensitive single molecule counting instrument (SMCxPRO) with a small multi-disciplinary team, for quantification of low abundance proteins in biological research. ● Supported manufacturing by designing procedures, documentation, tooling, training, workstation configuration, and technical support. ● Worked hands on in manufacturing to address early manufacturing issues by establishing root cause through experimentation such as inconsistent optical performance, electrical failures and improved mechanical tolerancing.

Test Engineer
Seattle, Washington, United States
● Performed quality and performance testing and validation of imaging flow cytometers for biological applications. ● Involved heavily in all stages of the manufacturing process: laser calibration, lens system assembly, construction of mechanical and micro-fluidic sub-assemblies; alignment and optimization for optical subsystems (imaging, diffractive, laser and LED brightfield). ● Optimized and debugged optical, electrical, mechanical and microfluidic systems. ● Developed and implemented optical alignment solutions and CAD models/engineering drawings.
