Research Fellow – Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) (1 Year Experience | Kelanitissa & Sapugaskanda Power Plants) Conducted research on modeling and parameter estimation of Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) and governor systems at Sapugaskanda Power Plant, leading Sri Lanka’s first AVR and governor parameter estimation project. This research aimed to develop a cost-effective, in-house parameter estimation method to reduce CEB’s reliance on foreign expertise. Engaged with Kelanitissa Power Plant to support research by validating measurement techniques, testing equipment accuracy, and ensuring reliable data collection methods for power system analysis. Key Contributions: • On-site testing at the Sapugaskanda 20 MW generator, conducting multiple field experiments to analyze AVR and governor system behavior. • Performed a pulse injection test to observe AVR output variations and assess system response under controlled disturbances. • Conducted a current injection (open-circuit saturation) test to evaluate excitation characteristics and machine stability. • Executed load rejection tests to analyze governor response and estimate critical system parameters. • Utilized Kelanitissa Power Plant’s resources to verify measurement equipment accuracy, ensuring precise data collection for model validation. • Developed and tested a MATLAB-based model for AVR and governor systems, comparing simulation results with real plant data. • Designed a switching circuit for the AVR sensing line and verified switching times and peak voltage levels using Hioki equipment. • Assisted in exciter repairs and protection compliance verification, contributing to system reliability improvements. • Collaborated closely with CEB engineers and power plant supervisors, gaining expertise in power system control, real-time data analysis, and field testing methodologies. During my internship at Sri Lanka’s largest base-load coal power plant, I had the incredible opportunity to gain deep insights into the core of national power generation and distribution. My exposure spanned across both electrical and mechanical engineering disciplines, offering me a well-rounded experience in real-world power systems. 🔹 Electrical Engineering Exposure: Studied real-time power generation and transmission systems, understanding the transformation of thermal energy to electrical energy. Worked inside the main control room, where I observed frequency regulation, load management, and power grid balancing using advanced Distributed Control Systems (DCS). Gained hands-on knowledge about Automatic Generation Control (AGC) and how engineers react promptly to critical system fluctuations to maintain grid frequency stability (50Hz). 🔹 Mechanical Engineering Exposure: Explored the operation of high-pressure steam turbines, boiler systems, and their role in the Rankine cycle. Participated in routine maintenance inspections, observing predictive diagnostics like vibration monitoring and thermal imaging to ensure equipment reliability. 🔹 Collaborative Learning & Field Work: Engaged in emergency response simulations with senior engineers, learning how to act decisively during power anomalies and grid instability. Understood the crucial integration between mechanical systems and electrical operations for continuous and stable power delivery to the national grid.
