Dr. Shirleen Coetzer

Dr. Shirleen Theisinger is a distinguished scientist and leader in the field of microbiology, holding BSc and BSc Hons degrees from the University of the Free State (UFS), and a dual MSc Research qualification in Microbiology from UFS and the University of Norway. She earned her Ph.D. in Environmental Health from the Central University of Technology in 2020. Her groundbreaking research has been published in an internationally recognized book, Ideas and Applications Toward Sample Preparation for Food and Beverage Analysis, and as a scientific article in the prestigious journal PLOS ONE. Dr. Theisinger has also presented her findings on esteemed international platforms. As the Founder and Director of SMT LABS, the only ISO-accredited Food Microbiology Testing Facility in the Free State, and SMT VET, Dr. Theisinger has made significant contributions to the industry. Under her leadership, SMT LABS first achieved SANAS accreditation in July 2015, with SMT VET obtaining SANAS and DALRRD accreditation in 2021. Today, as Managing Director, she oversees laboratory operations, ensures the highest quality standards, and is dedicated to enhancing client service while making a positive impact on the food industry. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dr. Theisinger is a devoted mother to three beautiful children—Lisa, Brian, and Emma. She is passionate about extreme trail running and finds joy and challenge in the mountains, navigating the technical trails whenever she gets the chance. Grateful for the strong support of her family, Dr. Theisinger is guided by her deep faith in Almighty God and upholds ethics as the foundation of her work and life.
