Research Intern – Reactor Engineering Division, BARC Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Trombay, Mumbai January 2025 – April 2025 Conducted experimental residual stress analysis on Pressure Tube–End Fitting (PT-EF) rolled joints used in 220 MWe Indian Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) under the guidance of Scientific Officer Rehan Raza. 1.Applied the Hole-Drilling Strain Gauge Method (ASTM E837-08) to measure near-surface residual stresses in nuclear-grade Zr-2.5%Nb/SS403 mechanical joints — a semi-destructive, cost-effective technique suited for complex geometries. 2.Installed Type A strain gauge rosettes on the inner surface of pressure tube specimens; performed sequential EF sleeve cutting, PT slitting, and incremental hole drilling (0–2 mm depth in 0.2 mm steps) with real-time strain acquisition. 3.Computed hoop (circumferential), axial, shear, and principal residual stresses using ASTM-prescribed formulations; identified a critical tensile stress zone (~23 mm span) beyond the Burnish Mark — a region susceptible to Delayed Hydride Cracking (DHC). 4.Confirmed all stress magnitudes stayed below 60% of material yield strength, validating structural safety of the rolled joint under reactor operating conditions. 5.Validated the hole-drilling technique as a reliable diagnostic tool for structural health monitoring in nuclear pressure boundary components.
