Roger Powell, Ph.D.

I am an English Instructor, Writer, Researcher, and Writing Center Director. In my teaching, I focus on a concept I call holistic student development to help my students develop as writers, readers, speakers, thinkers, and people. This concept focuses on students developing knowledge and skills that are transferrable to other contexts, helps them develop positive dispositions about learning, and helps them by engaging them in meaningful assignments, projects, and writing. My academic writing has focused on how students transfer their writing knowledge and skills from one context to another, how teachers give effective feedback on student writing, and how writing centers can be run effectively at colleges. My academic writing has appeared in Kairos: A Journal of Rhetoric, Technology, and Pedagogy, Composition Forum, The Journal of Response to Writing, The Peer Review, Praxis: A Writing Center Journal, Writing Spaces, and the WLN Digital Edited Collection How to Teach Writing Tutors. My creative work focuses on poetry and horror fiction. For my poetry, I just recently published a book of poems titled Dandelions Aren't Weeds: Poems on Masculinity, Identity, and Life with Power Within Her Publishing. This collection pushes back on traditional notions of masculinity by advocating for a more complex view of masculinity, which mirrors my own lived experiences. My other poems have appeared in Red Flag Poetry and Works and Days. For my fiction, I'm currently working on a Horror Novel and several horror short stories.
