Research Assistant Professor: Biogenesis and pharmacology of ion channel receptors @ Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine

About

I am a protein scientist with 13 years of PhD-level experience. My research focuses on identifying and elucidating the molecular mechanisms of amyloidogenic and membrane proteins implicated in brain disorders, including ion channel receptors.I use molecular biology, structural biology, biochemistry, cell biology, electrophysiology, and AI to study protein aggregation and interactions. These interactions are critical to the biogenesis and pharmacology of ion channel receptors and, consequently, to synaptic transmission. My research expands knowledge of how the functional amyloid proteins CRES and CRES3 form kinetically, identifies the RIC-3 binding motif on the serotonin type 3A receptor, and reveals molecular mechanisms that regulate the biogenesis of the alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. These receptors are implicated in schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and autism spectrum disorder. As a scientific author, I have published 20 peer-reviewed articles in journals, including Scientific Reports, the Journal of Biological Chemistry, PNAS, the Biophysical Journal, and the Journal of General Physiology. I have also authored more than 20 abstracts presented at international conferences, including the European Magnetic Resonance Meetings and the annual meetings of the Biophysical Society and the Society of Neuroscience.I am passionate about crafting narratives from research findings and communicating them to diverse audiences across platforms. When doing so, I often start by creating figures that translate complex scientific data into clear, accurate, and accessible content for broad audiences. Along with the figures, I develop and write research manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. It is also energizing to draft abstracts, create posters and slide decks, and deliver talks to communicate research findings at symposia and conferences.Beyond research, I train and coach students to use lab equipment, conduct experiments, and present their findings. I find it deeply fulfilling to see them work independently, solve problems, and present their data with confidence.Working with cross-functional teams is always a favorite part of my work. Together, we ensure our laboratory is well managed and compliant with the university’s safety policies. Furthermore, interviewing medical student candidates has consistently been engaging and rewarding. Cross-functional teamwork allows me to see the impact of my work in the broader context of research, education, and the future of health care.
