Researcher - Experimental Physics

As a material scientist in the department of Surfaces and Thin Films and Computational Physics of the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, I studied optical interference phenomena that are responsible for the most beautiful colours found in nature. Besides running laboratory experiments, I programmed and performed computer model simulations to acquire new optical understanding on these phenomenal biological nano-architectures.

MSc Research Project

During my Master Research Project I engineered carbon-based nanomaterials, which will shape incredible future technologies… Most importantly, though, I learnt to apply the great amount of knowledge acquired during my ‘Advanced Materials’ courses: I had the privilege to use a wide range of vacuum technologies. I mastered the use of CVD, SEM, XPS, (low temperature) LEED setups and also used Raman Spectroscopy, TEM and UED. Of course I also performed many technical tasks that are never mentioned in any CV: introducing sublimation crucibles to UHV chambers, performing bake-outs and leak-checks, repeatedly sputtering/annealing and performing cryogenic experiments deep into the evenings, with the greatest focus and diligence….. and calibrating, calibrating, calibrating. Last but not least, I had the honour to be part of a team of lovely people and talented researchers from all around the world. Thank you Surfaces and Thin Films group!
