• 6 weeks of vacation work done at the Quality Engineering department where I have gained experience in data analysis, quality assurance, operations and business improvement • Investigation of tested vs predicted mechanical properties of steel in order to increase confidence levels when using the EPC software • Conducted rolling and testing of steel grade RC1-18 without titanium in order to determine its strength and quality. Having properties of this material within specifications could lead to the omission of titanium in further production of coils, resulting in a cost saving of R1.6 million per annum. • Acquired knowledge of the hot strip mill processes as well as tensile testing procedures

• 6 weeks of vacation work completed at the Coke Making department where industrial experience was gained with focus on the processes within the various sections in the coke making plant namely; coal and coke handling, coke oven batteries and the gas purification plant. • Investigated the screening yield of metallurgical coke. This included performing mass balance calculations using excel in order to determine the coke yield. A sampling process was also conducted to indicate particle size distribution and efficiency of the screening process. This calculation is important for logistic purposes to ensure correlation to book stock values.
