Marco Forgione MCIEx
Director General @ The Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade
About
As Director General of the Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade (CIOE&IT), I lead a globally recognised organisation dedicated to empowering UK MSMEs in navigating complex international trade landscapes amid geopolitical shifts. With over 25 years experience in membership organisations, I've transformed institutions into high-impact hubs for advocacy, education, and commercial growth — at CIOE&IT alone I've generated over £100m in contracts and driven revenues from £2m to £16.5m. My expertise spans strategic leadership in regulated environments, where I've addressed systemic barriers like talent development, service innovation, and cross-sector collaboration. During the COVID-19 pandemic, global supply chain disruptions, and economic volatility, I restructured operations, expanded membership from 2,500 to over 4,000, and secured multi-year, multi-million-pound deals. This culminated in His Majesty King Charles III granting the Institute the Royal Charter in December 2023, in recognition of our national and international impact. As a trusted advisor, I represent MSMEs on the UK Economic Security Business Group, chaired the UK Government's E-Commerce Trade Commission, and served as the UK B20 representative. Previously, I advised on HMRC's Small Business Advisory Panel. My geopolitical insights—analysing issues like US-China tensions, Brexit implications, and sustainable supply chains—have made me a sought-after commentator for BBC, The Times, The Washington Post, CNN, Financial Times, and Al Jazeera. In prior roles, including Chief Executive of the British Antique Dealers' Association and EVCOM, I increased memberships by 35% and 20% respectively, diversified revenues, implemented digital transformation, and forged international partnerships in markets like the US, China, EU, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. I'm passionate about trade, geopolitics, and building resilient organisations. I serve as a Visiting Professor at Aston University, and am an experienced public speaker, conference facilitator and analyst. Let's connect, I'm always interested to explore collaborations on trade, geopolitics, risk mitigation, or organisational strategy. In an era of AI and digitalisation person to person is even more powerful.
