Let's keep it real: Twenty years ago, I was a broke art student who lost a pair of expensive Ray-Bans and thought, "There's got to be a better way." So I started a sunglasses company named after my dad's lawn-mowing sneakers. (Yes, really.) What began as me packing orders in a one-car garage while surviving on ramen and optimism has somehow become a global brand. We've gone from selling a few pairs online to being the Official Eyewear of the PGA TOUR, having our sunglasses worn by celebrities (I'm talkin' OSCAR WINNERS!), and shipping shades all around the world. Not bad for a guy whose business plan was literally "make cool sunglasses that don't cost a fortune." My actual qualifications: -TWO art degrees (surprisingly useful for a sunglasses company) -20 years of figuring it out as I go -Unhealthy obsession with buying domain names (I own 160+ URLs) -Expert at turning "that idea is kind of whack" into "wait, that actually worked" I believe business should be creative, authentic, and—radical concept—actually fun. Knockaround makes sunglasses for people who want to look good without emptying their bank account. Sometimes we collaborate with major sports leagues (MLB, NFL), sometimes we make limited edition sunglasses inspired by ramen noodles. Both approaches have worked. I'm currently working remotely from Virginia after 18 years in San Diego, proving that you can lead a California-cool brand from anywhere as long as you remember not to take yourself too seriously.
