I processed tree samples for graduate research projects. The main project I worked on involved harvesting loblolly pine saplings by each year's flush. I then separated the stem, branches, and needles into different bags, dried them and recorded the weights.

Studying Thousand Cankers Disease: a bark beetle-fungal pathogen complex recently introduced to East Tennessee

I am currently PhD student in the entomology department at UCD, and I am investigating the invasive walnut twig beetle and thousand cankers disease currently affecting several North American walnut species. My research interests are focused on nonnative, invasive forest insect pests, particularly bark and wood boring beetles.

Processed wood and foliage samples for a carbon13 uptake experiment in cottonwoods: dissected foliage into petiole, main vein, secondary veins, and leaf meso, separated the outer-bark, inner-bark, and xylem, dried all the vegetation samples and finally weighed them Built thermal dissipation sensors for a resin flow study; involved soldering and wiring the sensor components together Assisted graduate students in identifying plant species in the field for use in studies

* Assisted graduate student's research projects, including the following: * Hemlock woolly adelgid study-aided in the selection and set up of sampling plots throughout the Chattahoochee National Forest * assisted in twig sample analysis * Interactions between bark beetles and fire study-aided in the trap set up in the Whitehall trials * helped sort samples and identify Scolytidae species * Responses of Sirex noctilio to southern pine species study-assisted in the selection and cutting of southern pine species * transported the logs to a study facility * helped set up the experiment * measured the resin canal area in wood samples from each pine bolt using Image Pro-Plus 7.0© software * Southern pine beetle project-assisted in the selection of some of the field sites * collected pit fall and funnel trap samples * helped process the samples in the lab * CAPS and EDRR surveys-assisted in trap set up, sample collection, and sample sorting and species identifications * Worked part-time through my last semester as an undergraduate * hired full time as of January 1 2010

* Summer DNR internship that exposed me to all levels of state park employment: * Shadowed the maintenance crew * learned to operate a tractor, brush hog, Z-turn mower * learned the basics to general park up-keep for day to day visitors * Shadowed the park manager in his various interactions with visitors * assisted on disturbance calls and learned how to deal with the management of the people as well as the natural resources * Worked at the front desk answering the phones, ringing up visitors and campers, and ran the register for the gift shop
