Harry Van den Akker
Professor in Transport Phenomena @ Delft University of Technology
About
2021 ‘William R. Kenan Jr.’ Visiting Professor for Distinguished Teaching at Princeton University: to teach Transport Phenomena to Princeton students from my Delft textbook ' Transport Phenomena: the Art of Balancing'. 2018 Burgers Visiting Professor of Fluid Mechanics at the University of Maryland (College Park) Bernal Professor of Fluid Mechanics at the University of Limerick In September 2013, I joined the University of Limerick (UL), Ireland, as the Bernal Professor of Fluid Mechanics in the context of a 50M€ initiative to establish a world leading research centre, named the Bernal Institute. The challenge was and is to establish an internationally renowned group in the field of Fluid Mechanics, supported by a start-up grant of 500k€. Thanks to my continued affiliation with Delft University, I was able to attract several Dutch graduate students to UL. In the meantime, the UL Fluids group has grown (now 10-12 research fellows, postdocs and PhD students) by participation in several Irish national research centres (based at UL): - in years 2013-2019, the Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC), being the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Research Centre for Pharmaceuticals: projects with Johnson & Johnson (on emulsions), and Rusal (on slurries) - the Dairy Processing Technology Centre (DPTC), funded by/via Enterprise Ireland (EI): projects on pneumatic transport and spray drying - the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre (PMTC), EI funded: a project on cleaning reactors - SSPC-Phase 2 (2019-2025): several fundamental research projects (2 PhD students, 1 postdoc). All the above projects were/are characterized by a fundamental (multi-phase) fluid mechanics approach, involving long-term research fellowships and PhD positions. Summary of my scientific output (July 2023): Number of publications: 150 (ISI); 169 (Scopus); Total number of citations: >4900 (ISI); >5600 (Scopus); Number of citations per paper: 33.5 (ISI); H-index: 38* (ISI); 40 (Scopus) *means: 38 of my journal papers have been cited at least 38 times. Expertise: Transport Phenomena; Computational Fluid Dynamics; Fluid Mechanics; Turbulence; Multi-Phase Flow; Lattice Boltzmann Techniques; Computational Reactor Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Numerical Simulations
