David Hill

David Hill has provided an extraordinary contribution of distinctive design and planning to the southeastern United States. Drawing inspiration from the pastoral landscapes of the Shenandoah Valley and western Virginia Highlands, David is driven by his sense of desire to preserve and enhance the upland South, bringing a new level of quality to this settled, sometimes under-appreciated region. This is evident in his 1000-plus projects ranging from regional urban design and college campus additions to scenic and heritage trails and parks, and multi-state highway and utility corridors. Distinguishing practice between "making great places" and "making places great," David strives to foster the sense of place within each locality; whether by maintaining its integrity or by introducing new design elements. Always searching for threads, which help the landscape tell its story, his work reflects a landscape architect not afraid to sew together remnants of past landscapes to create a rich and living new place. Consequently, David’s signature works are contextual, complex and ingenious in their subtlety. He has worked passionately to bring attention to the landscape architectural treasures within the region.
