About
Hi, I’m Cherie! I’m a PhD Student in the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University advised by Sebastian Scherer. My research interest is in the intersection of field robotics, computer vision and machine learning to develop robots that can continuously learn in new scenarios by reasoning about uncertainties and consequences. Developing such robots can break the need of immense human engineering when encountering new situations and environments and pave the way for robots capable of operating effectively and at scale in diverse scenarios.

PhD Student in Robotics
Greater Pittsburgh Area
• Researching computer vision and learning algorithms to increase sensing horizon and deployment envelope for multiple applications: offroad driving, search-and-rescue, and wheelchair navigation. • Researching generalizable, uncertainty-aware perception for autonomous wheelchairs using LLM and Foundation Models (Funded by Japan AIST). • Researching ways to communicate robotics capabilities to the public and policymakers (Collab. with OECD). • Developed perception systems for high-speed off-road driving (Funded by DARPA). • Built a multi-drone planner for 3D actor reconstruction. Collaborated with three labs from CMU and UMN to build an autonomous outdoor MoCap for dense reconstruction (Funded by NSF).

HMC Clinic Project Leader

I led a team of 5 in an industry-sponsored project to characterize the impact of building materials and geometries on RF propagation using Vector Network Analyzers, Signal Generators, and Spectrum Analyzers. Robotics Researcher
Lab for Autonomous and Intelligent Robotics

I worked on tracking shark aggregations with multiple underwater robots! For this research, I received a Wrigley Institute Summer Graduate Fellowship from the University of Southern California (USC), usually reserved for Ph.D. candidates, as an undergraduate to conduct robotics research in Catalina.

Engineering Practicum Intern
Mountain View
I developed an internal tool for Google Analytics to monitor trends and detect anomalies in BigTable usage. The tool identifies possible concerns (ex: Stale BigTables, Sudden changes in BigTable usage and user group quota usage) and alerts the concerned engineer(s) of any issues.
