Alexander Cardia
Graphics/Multimedia Editor, Visual Investigations @ The New York Times
About
I'm a Graphics Editor on The New York Times' Visual Investigations team, where I work on investigative reporting about conflict, crisis, and accountability — combining analysis of visual evidence, news design, and open-source research. My work has contributed to two Pulitzer Prizes for International Reporting, for the investigation into Russian atrocities in Bucha, Ukraine, and for coverage of the October 7 attacks in Israel, as well as a News & Documentary Emmy.Day to day, I sync and analyze video evidence from CCTV, body-worn cameras, user-generated footage, and metadata; verify and authenticate imagery; reconstruct timelines and spatial relationships; and translate findings into precise visual packages including animations, maps, reconstructions and motion-driven reports that help readers see for themselves what happened. I've contributed to investigations into the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, the beating of Tyre Nichols, the massacre in Uvalde, the expanding Chinese surveillance state, the October 7 attacks, and the Trump rally shooting, among others.I came to this work through fifteen years of post-production, design and creative direction. I ran my own studio for a decade, directing motion and visual campaigns for ESPN, HBO, Ford, and others; led creative as a founding hire at Imprint, a mobile visual learning platform; and served as Creative Director at Crew Cuts, a post-production studio, working with Google, CVS, and Comcast. That background shapes how I approach visual storytelling today, with an eye for narrative structure, design systems, and clarity.
