About

I founded Values Added Financial to help people live better financial lives. I am a comprehensive financial planner and investment advisor who focuses on serving progressives as they aim to improve their own lives and the world around them. Before launching Values Added, I spent 10 years as an award-winning financial educator, leading national projects for the federal government and unions. Most recently, I worked for several years at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, helping financially empower Americans with low income. I was a part of projects at CFPB that reached over a million Americans. Before that, I directed the AFL-CIO's Investor Education Project and was a faculty member at the National Labor College. My project served more than 500,000 union members through financial and investment education. The project was funded by the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. -- The views and opinions expressed by Zach Teutsch are his own, and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Values Added Financial.

As a member of the CFPB's Office of Consumer Response, I investigated consumer complaints and rigorously analyzes cases to determine regulatory compliance/non-compliance. I identified patterns of unfair, abusive, deceptive, or otherwise problematic practices so that the Bureau could take action to resolve them. I focused on credit reporting, debt collection activities, mortgage products, especially delinquent debt servicing, errors in the credit reporting of mortgages, debt collection, misapplied payments, deed-in-lieu transactions, and loss mitigation more broadly. In cases where violations occurred, I directly recovered hundreds of thousands of dollars for consumers, contributed to millions of dollars worth of relief for consumers, and contributed to work that made markets more efficient and fairer in many ways and led to sanctions for problematic behavior. I most frequently worked with ECOA, UDAAP/DFA, TILA, RESPA, FCRA, and FDCPA. and other relevant regulations. I also:  Determined whether complex oral and written inquiries received from consumers and/or other agencies have a significant policy or legal implications, and if they did, initiated broader review with internal stakeholders.  Synthesized and documented complex fact patterns into understandable summaries for use in wide-ranging organizational oversight activities.  Performed independent research of existing consumer financial protection regulations to determine their correct application in ambiguous or complex consumer complaint scenarios.  Identified trends and patterns for use by supervision and enforcement.
