Our product was a data path SMB packet redirector appliance. It was built off Windows 2003 server and had drivers interacting with the CIFS server and client drivers, TDI stack, and file system. We had about 20 different object classes that interacted with each other on different levels. The locking scheme we started with became too restrictive and caused performance issues. So, along with the chief architect, I designed and single handedly implemented the new locking scheme. This required what amounted to developing our own thread dispatcher that played nice with the windows scheduler, using homegrown event and mutex objects.
