About
Dr. Yurong Chen is a former Sr. Principal AI Scientist at Intel Corporation and Director of AI Research Lab at Intel Labs China. He led cutting-edge research on core AI algorithms and tech innovations in efficient AI model development and optimization to advance Intel AI SW/HW platforms and solutions from Client/Edge to Cloud. He and the team delivered advanced visual analytics and leading deep learning based visual understanding and synthesis technologies to impact Intel HW/SW platforms and solutions including XPU/dGPU, Movidius VPUIP (MTL/LNL NPU), OpenVINO, Visual Sensing Technology for Evo platforms, 3DAT, Unite, RealSense Technology, etc. His team also delivered core AI technologies such as Visual AI/3DAT technology, 3D face technology, and tiger Re-ID for "Opening Ceremony of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics", “Chris Lee World’s First AI Music Video”, “The Great Wall Restoration” and “Saving Amur Tigers” to promote Intel AI Tech/Thought leadership. Meanwhile, his team won and achieved top rankings in many international visual challenges' tasks including weakly-supervised scene parsing (CVPR'20), image matching and multi-view reconstruction (CVPR'19), adversarial vision (NeurIPS'18/17), multimodal emotion recognition (ACM ICMI EmotiW 2017/16/15), object detection (MS COCO 2017), visual question answering (VQA 2017), video description (MSR-VTT 2016), etc. Before his current position, he was a research manager driving embedded vision application research and Joint Path-finding in applications with Intel business units. He led the 3D content creation project, delivering leading research results and advanced system prototypes for immersive connected experiences in 2008~2010. Before that, he led a team to release and maintain the Model-based Computing Benchmark suit (MCBench) and also supported users across and outside Intel (PARSEC) to influence the evolution of multi/many-core systems. Due to his outstanding research achievements and tech contributions, he received 2 Intel China Awards, 3 Intel Labs Academic Awards – “Gordy Awards”, and 5 Intel China QGS Awards. He has published over 80 technical papers with 9500+ citations and holds over 100+ patent applications (90+ granted). Before joining Intel, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Institute of Software, CAS. He received a Ph.D. degree in computational mathematics from Tsinghua University.

Engineering Manager & Sr. Researcher
Led the facial gesture tracking SDK development and 3D avatar model generation/animation for an internal venturing project for Intel first mobile chat app Pocket Avatars (officially launched in June 2014). Built the team in a short time, well defined the developing process, drove high productivity to hit key milestones, which resulted in a successful PA technology transfer to Intel BU for productization.

Technical Lead & Sr. Researcher
Conducted embedded benchmarking and workload analysis research. Led the Embedded Benchmark suite (EBench) development and release work to support embedded system research (ESR). Delivered 2 versions of EBench which can drive embedded architecture design.Led the team to successfully deliver the first set workloads for SmartTVmark & report system level analysis on the Intel CE4100 platform. Conducted workload analysis and advanced visual analytics (VA) app driven system SW/HW acceleration research for IA platforms. Explored opportunities for embedded vision app prototyping and related core technologies (algo, HW/SW system & interface) research.

Team Lead & Sr. Researcher
Led the 3D content creation project for immersive connected experience. Led the team to successfully deliver the state-of-the-art 3D content generation research results and prototype system. Showed “3D Model Creation for Amateurs” demo with incremental results in IDF Beijing, R@I day, IDF San Francisco, ILC Open Day and Intel China Innovation Day, respectively. The demo got well received by the industrial, academic and internal audience including CTO and some Intel Fellows. The team also published an oral paper in CVPR 2010.

Project Manager & Sr. Researcher
Led a team to release and maintain the Model-based Computing Benchmark suit (MCBench), and supported users across & outside Intel (PARSEC) to influence the evolution of multi/many-core systems.
