As an all-round HR professional, I find it fulfilling to be able to recruit, manage and nurture excellent talent into a competitive advantage. I thrive on my excellent communication and negotiating ability to attend to employee concerns and questions affecting their line of work. I am tasked to ensure the health and safety of all employees. As part of a team, I coordinate accident investigations, near falls and misses while keeping record of all happenings in the warehouse. Also, I am tasked to coordinate WSIB claims through the issuance and filing of various forms statutorily required by law. Also, I assist in the on-boarding and orientation processes on new employees to ensure a smooth transition in their new roles and environment. Even though not my duty to develop training modules or conduct training, I am well equipped to design training modules after conducting a needs analysis, administer training and measure training transfer. In addition, I maintain, create and manage spreadsheets that span from pension and benefits, health and safety, training and development and union activity. In dealing with highly sensitive employee information, I file documents both electronically and physically to have an up-to-date employee database while drafting HR related communiques for the consumption of employees. Also having manufacturing experience as a General labourer across many manufacturing industries, I am able to advise my superiors on the best ways to tackle certain situations because I understand perfectly what goes on a manufacturing floor. With my openness to learn, I am always open to partake in any HR Special Projects as and when my support is needed.

With a staff strength of over 500 employees, ParaMed provided me an opportunity to grow as an HR professional. I stood to promote organizational culture, positive work relationships and environment. On a daily basis, I was responsible for full cycle recruitment of nurses and personal support workers. I averaged about 40 hires a month at peak periods by leveraging my superior knowledge of recruitment techniques and laws. I designed job postings, conducted interviews and conducted background checks. I prepared HR documents as well as correspondence and announcements. I provided guidance in interpreting and applying compliance, regulations, policy, employment law and contractual obligations. I supported bi-weekly orientation activities which included health and safety portions to help new hires acclimatise to their new work environments and prevent worker injuries. To keep cutting edge HR information, I updated employee information into the in-house HRIS and also maintained hard-copy/electronic files. HR special projects were my forte, and I partook in them whenever they arose.

I came to Teknion furniture as a temporary worker from an agency in a general labourer capacity. By dint of my leadership skills, awareness of health and safety, mediation and problem solving skills, I quickly rose through the ranks to be responsible for training new hires on safe manufacturing practices thereby eliminating loss time and WSIB claims. With people from diverse backgrounds, I mediated employee misunderstandings and sort amicable settlements thereby promoting a peaceful and friction free work environment. I took the initiative to support health and safety training sessions by helping explain training material to employees who had a poor command of English. I left with a deep understanding of manufacturing processes and a feel of what it feels like to be a floor associate which I believe has improved my ability to deal with employees in manufacturing plants or warehouses.

I had a nagging ambition to pursue an MBA. I went in for it based on the prestige attached to having it on your resume but I quickly realised it wasn’t meant for me a few months into the program. I took away a great network of classmates , a solid foundation of the business world and a lesson which only experience can teach . Maybe one day I will go back and finish .
