My missions: 1. Internalize tech skills by recruiting a first team of developers and providing a technical vision - From one FTE and 4 off-shore contractors to 6 FTEs, 2 apprentices and 1 off-shore contract (senior dev poached from the agency we worked with). - Distribution of knowledge across the team. - Charted the path of a full revamp of the backend, using serverless, more suited to our business needs. And more. 2. Improve our project management and engineering practices in order to raise the quality - Improved team rituals - Fostered ownership from engineers - Introduced code reviews - Introduced Continuous Delivery thanks to speeding and automating deploys - Improved observability tooling (Honeycomb, Sentry) - Introduced incident-management pratices - Terraformed most of the infrastructure And more. 3. Contribute meaningfully to the product I identified that our biggest challenge to move up to the Enterprise market was related to security and compliance, so I focused on this. - Built the foundations of our information security management system - Revamped the infrastructure in order to provide network-level security (e.g. private networks) - Setting up metrics & logging (Datadog) - Introduced a suite of security-related products (Cloudflare) - Prepared two penetration tests - Hired our CISO And more.

As a Senior back end engineer, I was given the opportunity to provide significant input on the technical designs of our most complex projects, lead squads and mentor juniors — and still contribute to features. I was involved in the large-scale migration of our backend from JavaScript to TypeScript, using codemods. I took this opportunity to train the team in developing codemods, with mob-programming workshops. The migration was concluded in 3 weeks. I initiated and implemented a migration of our CI from Travis to GitHub Actions, at a time when issues with Travis caused our CI jobs to span up to two hours. After the migration, and a couple of optimizations, the CI jobs ran in under 35 minutes. With the product team, we attempted to document Spendesk's domain, adopting the methodologies of DDD. While the Head of Product and the product managers gathered expert knowledge, we turned it into a division in bounded contexts. We then modeled the core domain and mapped it to an interchange context, called "Core Spending". This context was then implemented as a TypeScript service. All mutations were recorded as events (event sourcing). As part of the "Boules & Bills" squad I led, we implemented reimbursements via wire transfers. Thanks a domain-driven approach, and by cutting the work properly, we managed to deliver the feature in four weeks, while improving code quality. I also trained all newcomers in our use of Git/GitHub and in our testing practices, and three bootcamp-trained junior engineers as part of the Enablement squad. My last project was more product-like: I was tasked to undertake a 6-week discovery of the onboarding process for our customers, as managed by the customer success team, and reported various recommendations of process changes, tooling introductions or product improvements in order to optimize it. During this tenure, I acquired significant knowledge and experience on TypeScript, DDD, event-sourcing, GraphQL, Cloudflare, AWS, Terraform...

I joined Spendesk when we were 24 people in the company; 4 in engineering. I participated in many deliverables with the team, working on the frontend and on the backend; the most significant projects are described below. With the product manager, we built a new iteration of our backoffice for KYB validation. It was implemented as an event-sourced process manager, in order to resolve concurrent operations from our Sales team and our banking partners. The UI was With the CTO and an intern, we moved from our in-house billing system to one integrated with Fusebill. As part of this project, I was personally involved with revamping the management of feature flags, implementing the integration with Fusebill, managing the migration, and advising on the technical implementation of the new pricing. Within our squad, we built the mileage feature. It was designed in two layers: one to compute mileage rates and track mileage, which could be extended to handle rules from many country, and one to integrated it with the existing product — from the request to the reimbursement. I also mentored a bootcamp-trained junior engineer, performed many code reviews, and assisted the team with complex git operations.
