In this position, the research has cooperated with USP Technologies and Brown and Caldwell to research and commercialize the IntensiCarb technology on the market. The title of the research is intensifying biosolids fermentation to recover value-added products from biosolids. With the application of vacuum on an alkaline fermenter, IntensiCarb can separate SRT and HRT (reducing footprint), ammonia, phosphorus, and VFA recovery. SUMO software is used to simulate the IntensiCarb manufacturing process and study the impact of the implementation of IntensiCarb on the whole plant performance.

The title of my PhD thesis is Simultaneous nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal at low temperatures. The keywords of this study are nutrient removal, SNDPR, SUMO, simulation, floc model, and microbial community analysis. • Achieved simultaneous nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal (SNDPR) when treating real municipal wastewater at 10 ℃ • Developed a comprehensive floc model in SUMO to understand carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus transformation in SNDPR • Conducted microbial community analysis • Published three research papers in Bioresource Technology and Science of the Total Environment

Graduate Assistant
I did two research projects during these three years. 1.Modifying ASM2D to improve partial nitrification simulation Description: The project establishes two extended models based on standard ASM 2D. We utilize one scenario to calibrate the parameters through nonlinear optimization function provided by the Matlab and then use another scenario to validate the parameters. Finally, a local sensitivity analysis of different kinetic parameters is conducted to identify which parameters are the most sensitive. 2.Simulation of the partial nitrification process of a biofilm filter Description: The purpose of this project is to use ASM 2D to simulate 7 components change with time and depth in biofilm filter, so this problem belongs to 1-D. We utilize pdepe function provided by Matlab to solve 7 nonlinear partial differential equations. The upper and lower boundaries of this system are related to the concentrations of 7 components that flow in and out of biofilm filter. The initial condition is the concentrations of 7 components that flow out of the biofilm filter. The final result is that we can look over the concentrations of 7 components at any time and any depth.

Mathematical modeling competitions
Mathematical modeling competition experiences are a great treasure for me. I did 4 competitions and won plenty of prizes, please see below. 1) Cellular automation is used to solve the differential model of influence of lane blocked by vehicle to city traffic capacity (China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, member) 2) Genetic algorithm is used in optimizing 7 unknown parameters of variable cycle engine of aerospaceplane (China Graduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, team leader) 3) Genetic algorithm is put into use to improve bioler parameters and to increase operating efficiency (CSEE Cup, team leader) 4) Grey comprehensive evaluation method is used to assess the performances of basketball, football and softball coaches. After that, the factor of time in the evaluation process is studied using the DEA model, and gender factor is also investigated into through mixed linear model.
