About

I am the Co-Founder and CEO of AfaSci, Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our lead program has completed Phase I trials and shows strong potential as a first-in-class non-opioid analgesic and anti-seizure therapy. In addition to our drug development efforts, AfaSci offers specialized CRO services based on our proprietary technology. I have served as an NIH scientific reviewer since 2004 to present. I was a Consulting Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine. I continue to collaborate on research in pain, epilepsy and neurodegeneration.

I undertook a Research Assistant job and also studied for a PhD under the guidance of Prof. Trevor Smart (now University College London). Here I made my first significant scientific discovery characterizing the physiological role of endogenous zinc in modulating synaptic transmission, leading to publication in Nature. I also found that γ-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) selectively activates GABAB receptors, which is now recognized as the mechanism underlying GHB action and efficacy in narcolepsy and other sleep disorders.
