Xin (Vernon) YUAN
Senior Research Associate @ University of Adelaide
About
Xin Yuan, a.k.a. Vernon, is fascinated by the effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and autonomous machines on our contemporary daily lives and the innovations they brought to the industry. He believes that related research should not be limited to “narrow” domains. As a result, he is now enthusiastically involved in many developments of intelligent robotic systems to investigate more efficient approaches to Human-like intellectual functions. He focuses on discovering novel methods of constructing Artificial General Intelligence and Advanced Uncrewed systems. Currently, Vernon is undertaking research at the University of Adelaide and working on discovering new approaches for the development of cognitive agent-based systems with AI and their impacts on the manufacturing, transportation and healthcare sectors. He teaches courses related to digital, electronics and autonomous systems. He has also supervised and led a long list of projects for developing advanced AI-enabled autonomous systems and applications.

Electrical and Electronics Engineering
Artificial General Intelligence is a conceptual topic in which machines can make decisions based on their understanding of the environment with processes indistinguishable from human intelligence. This work addressed the problem of developing an agent-based Artificial General Intelligence that can be implemented in compact and power-efficient electronic hardware. Numerical data were converted into explainable fuzzy symbolic representations, and decisions were triggered through a series of production rules in a hardware-based cognitive architecture. A modified Association Rules Mining method was introduced to autonomously discover effective rules for agents. The achievements were demonstrated by successfully reproducing low-level cognitive behaviours.

Elctrical and Electronic Engineering
Since 2012, Xin has started bachelor education in the field of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Adelaide. With four years of coursework study, Xin received the education which is necessary to become a professional electronic engineer. The program has completed in December of 2015, and the Honours Degree has been awarded on April 28th, 2016.
