For almost two decades specializing in Men's Health and Male Fertility, it has been a joy to help men transform into the best version of themselves and to help couples challenged by infertility realize their dream of a family. After my fellowship training, one of my first patients with BPH was a 70 year old grizzled cowboy from the Gila Mountains of New Mexico. He had fallen victim to the visceral reflex of healthcare to prescribe drugs, more drugs or higher doses, instead of performing appropriate diagnostics. By the time I saw him as a second opinion, his symptoms and bladder health from a tightening prostate were too far gone. Faced with the options of continuing on with his miserable life getting up all night long to pee or a major surgery with a lot of risk, he chose the preferred path that he could control. He used his gun to end his life. The memory of this man has stayed with me since 2006. This chronic disease of an enlarging tightening prostate (BPH) plagues men worldwide and will put the bladders of 280 million men over 64 years old in 2050 at risk of damage and dysfunction. I was raised in England, Malaysia and Norway as well as have volunteered for urology medical missions to Mongolia, Belize and Guatemala. It is apparent to me that this global problem will require global effort to find global solutions. While an extrovert by training, I am an introvert at heart and appreciated the unexpected silver lining of the fear-filled pandemic which was "time." Time to think about BPH and bladder health; time to learn to tackle fear by singing and playing my guitar on the streets of Las Vegas and Huntington Beach; time to write the ebook "The Five Stages of Bladder Health"; and time to teach and share online what I have learned over the 18 years. One of my favorite medical school memories continues to be as a Neuroanatomy Teaching Assistant, and it is a privilege to continue sharing my knowledge and experience to fellow urologists as a Keynote Speaker for national urology meetings as well as for corporate national sales meetings, It is privilege to have the opportunity to trailblaze a path for a cause that everyone can get behind. Men only have one non-transplantable bladder that needs to be better taken care of. All men should be able to live their best lives ... incontinence-free and catheter-free.
