Proofing and formatting manuscripts, reading submissions and deciding whether to publish them or not. After I read a submission or manuscript I would also write a short blurb and review, strenghtening my creative and critical writing skills. Publicity work involving promoting books on social networking sites and also phoning and emailing magazines or local papers who the particular text would be relevant to, in order to see if they would like to advertise it or write a piece on it.

After completing my internship I was given the opportunity to do work from home. This work varies from editing and formatting to publicity work for the eBooks the company has published. I recently did publicity work for the London History Festival which involved promoting the events and selling tickets. In order to do this successfully I decided to contact societies from universities which I thought would have a particular interest in certain events. I also contacted other literary festivals trying to arrange for some of Endeavour Press’ authors to give talks.

Reviewing submissions for both general submission and also the short story competition which was being ran at the time. As I already had significant experience reviewing submissions this internship allowed me the opportunity to improve my critiquing skills. I also began to review submissions outside of novels and non-fiction, such as poetry and short stories. I did a lot of publicity work whilst at The London Magazine, as well as promoting the magazine using social media I also found new platforms to utilise for the purpose of advertising both the magazine and the competition which was being ran. I found a vast number of podcasts, blogs, websites and forums to use for the purpose of promotion. I spent a lot of time helping the publicity assistant with the Books on the Underground campaign so I was able to further develop my understanding of publicity within publishing.
