I help technical specialists make the shift into people leadership. After 20 years in recruitment, I’ve seen the same pattern play out again and again. People are promoted because they’re excellent at their technical work, then expected to magically know how to lead others. Most don’t. Being good at the job doesn’t automatically mean you can build trust, give feedback, set direction, or create the conditions for a team to do its best work. I learned that myself, the uncomfortable way. The role changed faster than my skills did, and the identity shift took longer than I expected. So I decided to focus my work here. What I do now comes down to two things: • Assessing leadership readiness before someone is promoted or hired into a role that shapes culture • Supporting new and emerging leaders with practical, targeted development so they don’t have to figure it out by trial and error Most people don’t set out to be bad bosses. They’re just asked to do a very different job without the tools to do it well.
