Usama Iqbal

At Fraunhofer ISE, I am conducting research focused on optimizing sorptive dry air systems for battery cell production, contributing to the advancement of Germany’s energy-efficient industrial infrastructure. My work combines Modelica/Dymola simulation, thermodynamic modeling, and genetic algorithms to enhance system performance and achieve ultra-low dew points (–60 °C) required for high-purity cleanroom environments. I analyze the energy efficiency, stability, and cost-effectiveness of hybrid HVAC systems integrating sorption and refrigeration technologies, with the goal of reducing process energy demand in line with the German Energiewende and EU Green Deal objectives. The project links industrial decarbonization with data-driven control strategies to minimize energy losses and optimize operational flexibility.

At Canon Home Appliances, I worked on industrial energy efficiency and process optimization projects across utilities and HVAC systems. My main focus was to collect and analyze sensor-based operational data from steam, compressed air, and ventilation systems to identify performance losses and improve energy utilization. Using structured data evaluation and periodic measurement campaigns, I developed insights into system behavior, optimized operation schedules, and proposed low-cost energy conservation measures (ECMs) that improved reliability and reduced energy waste. I also supported energy audits following ASHRAE Level II guidelines, preparing technical reports and efficiency improvement proposals for plant management.

I interned as a Mechanical Engineer at WAPDA, Pakistan's head office, gaining valuable insights during my one-month tenure. I focused on observing and analyzing the central air conditioning system, contributing to my understanding of large-scale HVAC systems.

I interned at SNGPL's Faisalabad and head office in Lahore and compression station, with a special focus on a cogeneration plant featuring a gas turbine and absorption chiller. This experience deepened my knowledge of complex energy systems.
