Tumo Bathai

Lenamile Bathai is a highly experienced professional in power systems operations and electricity trading. Over the years, he has held several significant positions, culminating in his current role as Senior National Grid Controller with Botswana Power Corporation. In this capacity, he is responsible for monitoring, operating, directing, and coordinating all activities related to the national grid. In recognition of his exemplary performance, Lenamile received an award at the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology, and Energy Security excellence awards ceremony in May 2018. He was also a speaker at a green energy seminar in Gaborone on July 26, 2022, where he presented on "Decarbonization of Mines and Integration of Renewable Energy Technologies to the Grid." Additionally, he led a research project titled "Botswana's Solar PV Integration to the Grid," which focused on crucial issues such as grid inertia, system adequacy, and the impacts of decreasing synchronous generation due to increased solar PV penetration. Lenamile's educational background includes a Professional Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering from the International Institute of Management and Technical Studies (IIMTS) in India, as well as a Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Botswana. He has furthered his expertise with certificates in Power Systems Operations from Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre in Zambia, and in Control Area and Automatic Generation Control Principles from PPA Energy in the UK. His professional development also includes a study tour of energy markets in the UK and Norway in 2012, a Market Trading Platform certification in Mozambique in 2018, and the NORD Pool/SAPP Balancing Market certification in 2022. Lenamile is a dedicated member of the IEEE. He achieved the prestigious Senior Member grade in November 2022, a distinction awarded to only 10% of IEEE members globally. On April 21, 2023, he was appointed Section Liaison for Botswana to the IEEE Region 8 Climate Change Committee and also served as an ambassador for the 2023 IEEE Africon Conference in Nairobi. In addition to his speaking engagements, including at the IEEE-BIUST on renewable energy technologies and at the ERB Engineering Forum, Lenamile was a speaker at the Botswana Chamber of Mines' closing dinner in 2023, addressing the decarbonization of mines. He also participated as a speaker at the prestigious 3rd Annual Botswana Infrastructure and Alternative Investment Forum in October 2024.
