Self-proposed Master's research project for sponsor company Salcom Ltd, enabled through a Callaghan R&D Fellowship Grant. This research project aimed to investigate the applicability of a UAV-mounted cellular femtocell for Search and Rescue purposes. This project involved: - Design and build of UAV platform - Custom antenna gimbal design - Software Defined Radio design with custom FPGA images for use in srsRAN - Design of novel UAV tracking antenna to maintain high-speed eNB to EPC link - Extensive antenna simulation in Ansys HFSS - Simulation and validation of dynamic coverage patterns from aerial femtocell The results from this research were favorable and warrant further development of the system. To date, the research has resulted in 2 publications.
