About

My passion is wildlife and the environment. This jewel called Earth floating in the vastness of space is a rare and unique place, with incredible biodiversity and natural resources. Humans have had a tremendous impact on this planet and will continue to dominate into the future. However, there are ways to protect, manage, restore, and conserve wild places, species, and these precious resources, while continuing to thrive as a human race, if we focus on what we have in common. I seek to work in the field of wildlife research, management, protection, and restoration. I have experience with wildlife surveys, population management, habitat restoration, grant writing and management, and working with diverse stakeholders, landowners, entities, and partners. I've worked in WA state, Costa Rica, Panama, and South Africa. I've been a bird bander, research diver, wildlife capture assistant, project manager for habitat restoration projects, a GIS specialist, and more. My goal is to work, live, and play in ways that make a positive impact in my community, country, and world.

Seasonal position March - June of each year, teaching marine science to kids or adults on-board a vessel that traveled around Puget Sound for the day. We taught various classes on marine zoology, plankton, water chemistry, marine mammalogy, environmental awareness, watershed health, pollution, and other topics.

Performed work that supported sustainable management of the commercial fisheries for sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and geoduck, and performed research on a declining population of abalone, the Northern Pinto Abalone. My duties included performing subtidal dive surveys as part of a dive team to perform population assessments, enter data and maintain a GIS database of geoduck bed locations and animal densities for management purposes, liaised with other agencies (WA State DNR, Tribes, University of Washington), write grant proposals, present at professional meetings, and other tasks.

Performed field research on three rare bird species in Coiba National Park in order to support development of the National Park Management Plan. I lived in Panama during the field component portion of the work, but continued to perform data analysis, report writing, presentation of materials, and research paper writing through October of 2010. The three species were: the Coiba Spinetail, which was declared full species status by the AOU due to our research; the three-wattled bellbird; and the brown-backed dove. All are rare and/or declining species in their ranges. Our work contributed valuable information for protection and management of these species.
