I was appointed to shakeup Shell’s underperforming Asian Commercial Team that was scattered across 5 countries. I set a vision of building a single confident and competent commercial organisation to deliver Shell’s increasingly complex and valuable transactions. I achieved this by setting out common goals, by regularly meeting each practitioner face to face, and by setting up an ongoing training and coaching programme. This was enforced by my Commercial Assurance Process in which all were expected to participate. Deal flow increased and value achieved doubled. With this success I was asked to lead three high value deals: 1. 500bcf gas sale in the Philippines (Malampaya) that had previously been suspended 2. Negotiate for the construction of and access to a new onshore oil pipeline in New Zealand (Pohokura) 3. FPSO lease and gas and oil offtake agreements for one billion bbl (Gumusut) development costing $5billion that straddled the Sabah/Brunei international boundary
