Having started in advertising, I escaped into brand development in 1969. Most of my experience has been in the drinks business. Brands I created include Baileys, Le Piat d'Or, Smirnoff Black, Ciroc, Tanqueray Ten, J&B Jet, The Singleton, Aqua Libra, Purdey's, Sheridan's, Spey Royal and a brand of our own, Coole Swan - indisputably the world's best cream liqueur. My goal is to keep working and to persuade companies to adopt my brand development approach. To help these companies I have written a book about my experiences. The focus was working with IDV/Diageo through until 2005. My remit was to work with technical teams to develop brands for the company's international network. Countries covered included the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Russia, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Australia, South Africa and most European regions. In addition to idea creation, I was also responsible for liaising with designers and also planned or carried out research on all our developments. Other clients included Watneys, Allied Breweries, Bass, Kraft and Bacardi (after my contract with Diageo terminated.)

Founded with Hugh Seymour-Davies, I&D set up with one client, IDV. Baileys was created in our first week. Le Piat d'Or followed a year later. We also managed to branch out and work for Birds Eye, Wall's Meat, Shippams, Guinness, Whitbread, Unigate, Lever Brothers and Quaker. And we manufactured and marketed a brand of our own, a refrigerator deodoriser called Fridge Fresh.
