• Engineering of a novel separation unit increasing circularity and minimizing energy and material usage valorising the fermentation brine • Design and simulation of a bipolar membrane electrodialysis system tailored to protonate fatty acid salts to fatty acids, focused on fluid mechanics and mass transfer by solving the Maxwell-Stefan equation • Utilization of bipolar membrane water electrolysis substituting a sulfuric acid protonation reactor • Simulation of transient and 2D mass transfer of diffusing ions in electrolytic solution and membranes using high accuracy forward and backward differences • Development of a thermodynamic model for electrolytes to describe the equilibrium between solution and membrane interface • Parametric analysis, OPEX and CAPEX calculation, process optimization and integration to the existing production line suggesting alternative configurations • Outcome: A sophisticated model capable of describing a complex physicochemical process with only 10% difference from experimental results
