Tetyana Pylypiv Shippee

I am a Professor in the Division of Health Policy and Management at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and Associate Director for Research at the Center for Healthy Aging and Innovation. I also serve as Co-Director of the K12/KL2 Scholar Career Development Program with the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, funded by the National Institutes of Health. As a social gerontologist and health services researcher, my research focuses on improving the quality of long-term services and supports (LTSS) for older adults and people with disabilities by connecting research, policy, and practice. A growing portion of my work also addresses care quality for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD), with particular attention to quality of life and caregiver support.I lead partnerships with state agencies, providers, and international organizations to design and implement systems that measure and improve person-centered outcomes in LTSS. This includes work on public reporting, quality-of-life measurement, and accountability systems across nursing homes, assisted living, and community-based services. My work is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Minnesota Department of Human Services, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and other organizations.In addition to my U.S. work, I collaborate globally on long-term care reform and aging policy, sharing lessons from Minnesota while learning from reforms in other countries. I am particularly interested in how data, measurement, and governance systems can reduce inequities and improve the lived experience of people receiving care. I currently serve on a Technical Expert Panel to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services focused on nursing home quality rating systems, recently completed service as a standing member of an NIH study section, and consult with the World Bank. I am a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, where I previously served on the Board of Directors and as Chair of the Social Research, Policy, and Practice Section.
