Tenzin Shakya
Associate Security Consultant @ Mercury Information Security Services
About
I am a security consultant with hands-on experience across networking, web applications, and Linux-based systems. Through my consulting role, I have conducted multiple penetration tests, with a current focus on web application and external network pentesting. Outside of consulting work, I am an active CTF player under the alias "Fowl", primarily focusing on reverse engineering, forensics, and web challenges. CTFs play a key role in how I continuously develop my technical depth and problem-solving approach. Alongside industry work, I tutor at Macquarie University, supporting units in Offensive Security, Introduction to Computer Programming, and Secure Application Development. My teaching is grounded in real-world security practice, drawing from day-to-day consulting work and prior experience rather than purely theoretical examples. I am also involved in driving Carbonguard, a company focused on upskilling students through hands-on, practical cybersecurity experiences. I enjoy messing around with ham radio, local LLM development, vulnerability research, and modern security practices. I consider myself a keen, driven, lifelong learner. Always happy to connect with others who share an interest in cybersecurity!

Sessional Teaching Academic
I am currently tutoring computer programming, offensive security, and secure application design as a sessional teaching academic, where students gain understanding and support within the units. For example, providing insights into ethical hacking methodology, understanding security best practices, and programming fundamentals.

Student Drop-in Support Assistant
As part of the drop-in centre team, I provided technical support to undergraduate and postgraduate students, assisting with programming, databases, cybersecurity, web technologies, and any content-related issues. My explanation covers complex concepts from the topics listed and guides students in one-on-one and group sessions. The tenure allowed me to make a difference in the student-supported journey into having a better understanding of the content covered, whether systems programming or computer networking, ultimately fostering learning and academic success within the university community.

Co-Captain
The Hounds of Anubis
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
The Hounds of Anubis is a CTF team of students interested in Cybersecurity. We cross over categories including Web, Forensics, Reverse Engineering, OSINT, and binary exploitation. The team was co-founded in October 2024 alongside Marlon and myself, and we participate in several CTFs to upskill ourselves.

Cyber Security Consultant
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
As a Cybersecurity Consultant at EY, I gained valuable exposure to cybersecurity governance, assisting clients in ensuring their organisational compliance with relevant policies and frameworks. I worked extensively with standards such as ISO, NIST, and other industry frameworks, helping clients align their cybersecurity practices with these requirements. A key focus of my role was deep diving into vulnerability management, identifying and addressing potential risks to strengthen security posture. Additionally, I had the opportunity to explore compliance automation and its role in streamlining security processes. My work also began within Identity and Access Management (IAM), where I contributed to securing client systems and managing user access efficiently.

Data Analytic Intern
Macquarie Park, New South Wales, Australia
As a Data Analytics Intern at Optus, I initially focused on data visualisation and analysis, extracting meaningful insights to support decision-making. I then developed a basic machine learning model before transitioning from the Data Science team to the Machine Learning team. In this role, I explored various methods for maintaining ML models, with a strong emphasis on containerisation. Additionally, I gained hands-on experience with Kubernetes (K8s) for model deployment and orchestration, enhancing my understanding of scalable and efficient machine learning infrastructure.
