Conceived, created, and taught “CIS342: Information Networks for Modern Organizations,” exclusively using openly accessible online materials and electronic presentations. This Computer and Information Systems concentration core course covered technology and business opportunity fundamentals for data, voice, and video networking. The major course project involved creating a simulated business presence on the Internet.

Led computer science research and development organization. Initiated discussions, wrote proposals, negotiated agreements, and implemented joint projects with major industry partners. Provided presentations and seminars on research activities as part of broad outreach activities. Worked with higher education coalitions, such as the Big 10 and the Common Solutions Group, to build solutions to information technology challenges. Represented the university to standards consortia. Tripled organization size and budget through new grants and service offerings. Deployed Kerberos authentication, enterprise storage, and uniqname identity management.

Directed the application of leading-edge information and communications technologies to enhance the school’s missions, enabling new modes of curriculum delivery and augmenting research capabilities. Focus areas included learning and research collaboratories, next generation learning management systems, open educational resources, virtual immersive worlds, cyberinfrastructure, advanced networking, data center design, and health informatics.

On assignment from the University of Michigan, participated in the senior leadership team of Internet2, a non-profit consortium of over 300 education, government, and industry members working on Internet futures. Supervised applications area staff, planned and organized the applications activities, conducted technology assessment, and served as a central point of contact with Internet2 members and government and industry partners on applications issues.

Member of the senior leadership team for the 700 person Information Technology Division (ITD) with involvement in strategic planning, budgeting, and technical direction setting. Managed over 75 staff in ITD Human Resources administration; campus-wide Computing Education Services, Technology Assessment, and Technical Architecture; and the Center for Information Technology Integration. Co-directed ITD Organizational Development. Negotiated with campus human resources and implemented within the division a broad-banding classification system to provide more flexibility in staff hiring, retention, and career development. Established campus technical architecture process via federated, not top-down, coordination.

Led planning and operations of the $36 million, three year joint U-M / IBM IFS Phase I project. Established and maintained strong links with IBM management. Wrote proposals and met with major computer vendors regarding joint projects. Planned and led resulting research and development efforts. Led team of university researchers that produced software that IBM shipped as a product.

Edited bi-weekly MicroDigest section of U-M Computing News. Wrote news articles, industry analyses, and software, hardware, and book reviews. Developed and taught introductory and advanced microcomputer operating systems classes in Computing Center education program. Edited and co-wrote proposal resulting in $46 million NSFNET project based at Merit Network.

Instructor for HMP 668 “Introduction to Health Informatics,” adapting this course to be an overview of health informatics for non-IT professionals in the executive masters program.

Associate Chief Information Officer at Yale with responsibility for the medicine and health divisions (School of Medicine, Yale Medicine, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, and Yale Health Plan) and serving as an ex officio member of the Yale New Haven Health System IT leadership team.

Co-led the integration of Medical School and Hospital IT into a 900 person, $158M operating budget shared services organization supporting patient care, research, and education. Championed strategic initiatives including expanding data governance across all three missions, establishing a university-wide identity and access management program, and defining an integrated campus voice-over-IP strategy. Michigan Medicine, encompassing the Medical School and Hospitals and Health Centers, is a $4.9B enterprise with 2.3M patient visits/year, 1,000 hospital beds, and 30,000 employees.
