* Track and monitor state legislation related to sexual and reproductive health to inform our policy advocacy, ensure the accuracy of AbortionFinder.org, and provide technical assistance to policymakers and advocates; * Respond to media inquiries from print, radio, and television outlets to discuss state policy trends and Power to Decide’s work; * Hire, supervise, and provide mentorship to junior policy staff, contribute to several internal task forces related to the organization’s strategic plan; and * Managed a two-year project to design, develop, and disseminate a state policy toolkit, working with a broad array of internal and external stakeholders to build consensus, and meet project goals in a timely manner.

- Increased grassroots advocacy engagement, resulting in a significant rise in messages sent to Congress; - Led the redesign of the federal policy action center, enhancing user experience for advocates; and - Analyzed and commented on legislation and regulations and developed fact sheets and social media to support our policy efforts; and - Assisted with the development of our federal policy strategy.

Supported the public policy department’s advocacy work on evidence-based programs to reduce teen and unplanned pregnancy by: - Updating policy briefs as new data becomes available; - Drafting and sending email alerts to state and local contacts; - Preparing correspondence for Capitol Hill staff and other stakeholders; - Coordinating a sign-on letter to Congress; - Providing technical assistance; and - Representing The National Campaign at coalition meetings.

Supported The NewDEAL's work to bring together leaders focused on expanding opportunity for all by: - Researching and implementing a web-based survey solution for a policy ideas contest; - Monitoring and tracking progressive, pro-growth ideas from state and local electeds and think tanks; - Providing website assistance; - Maintaining documents and spreadsheets, assessing data management methods, and suggesting new solutions.

Supported the Center's work to expand and improve health insurance for children and families by: - Monitoring state legislation on Medicaid and CHIP; - Gathering enrollment, spending, and other data on public health insurance coverage for reports and briefs; - Blogging about new studies on public health insurance coverage; - Analyzing Census Bureau data for annual report on children's health insurance coverage; - Updating primers and health insurance data on a WordPress website; - Providing technical assistance to state-based advocates.

In this tax season position, I supported the volunteer and financial services department by: Explaining Peace Corps tax withholdings to Peace Corps volunteers; Maintaining the Excel spreadsheet used to calculate taxable earnings, based on the volunteer's country of service; Processing requests for lost W-2s and keeping detailed records of those requests.

I supported the family income assistance department by: Researching Census Bureau reports to find trends in poverty among demographic groups; Using Excel and STATA to conduct statistical analysis of poverty trends; Attending and reporting back to staff on briefings related to our work; Creating a PowerPoint presentation to train state advocates on how to access and use Census Bureau data.

I assisted two professors in the Sociology department by: Grading exams and writing assignments for undergraduate courses (American Society, Global Inequalities, Multi-ethnic Voices, Critical Social Theory, Major Social Theorists); Leading class discussions on introductory sociology topics, such as deviance and class; Meeting with students to discuss and provide feedback on assignments.

I supported Prevent Human Trafficking's efforts to bring awareness of the issue to students at American University by: Copy-editing promotional materials; Budgeting and assisting with programming for the student activity club at American University; Monitoring trafficking developments in the news; Drafting press releases; Representing the organization at coalition meetings and conferences.

As an intern for Becky's Fund, I supported the organization's mission to draw attention to domestic violence by: Drafting letters to local politicians, and contributing to the blog and newsletter to highlight our initiatives; Researching domestic violence laws and resources in order to connect clients with appropriate referrals; Drafting lesson plans for college level domestic violence education classes; Serving as a discussion leader at the “Be Your Own Heroine” workshop conducted for DC Girl Scouts.

Using the knowledge learned in the investigative unit, I supported the mediation unit's work by: Reviewing cases submitted for mediation to ensure that criteria was met for dispute resolution; Corresponding with civilian complainants and police officers to discuss concerns and coordinate mediation sessions; Preparing closing reports for the board.

At the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board, I investigated complaints brought by civilians against members of the NYPD concerning force, abuse of authority, discourtesy, and offensive language. I maintained an average docket of 25 cases by: Conducting weekly interviews with civilians and police officers with regard to alleged officer misconduct; Applying New York State penal and administrative laws to cases to determine if misconduct had been committed; Producing case reports and making recommendations to the board based on case findings.

Arranged for Dr. Jack Levin to come speak to student body about the sociology of prejudice, in order to address a hate crime incident that occurred on campus (2002). Organized a contingent of students to attend the Second National Student Symposium to Combat Hate and Prejudice on Campus at Northeastern University (2003).
