This semester I have had the opportunity to independently represent low-income employees in unemployment insurance appeals in front of ALJ’s, and assist DLSE attorney's in representing low-income employees in Labor Commissioner appeals in Superior Court. I've gained an array of practical lawyering skills by interviewing clients, preparing discovery requests and responses, reviewing evidence, drafting a trial brief, and preparing clients for hearings.

As an intern at California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc. (CRLA), I worked on employment law and housing discrimination cases. This work gave me the chance to apply and strengthen my skills with regard to client management, case evaluation, discovery, motion practice, and legal research and writing. My primary assignment involved interviewing clients and reviewing documents to prepare discovery responses for sixteen plaintiffs in a complex, multiple-party lawsuit involving housing, retaliation, and wage and hour claims. I also independently ran an educational workshop designed to help tenants facing eviction learn about their rights and how to respond to an unlawful detainer complaint.

Managed a fast-paced, expanding legal firm and provided legal support to 3 attorneys who specialize in representing disadvantaged, low-income employees in cases involving inadequate pay, discrimination, and sexual harassment, The firm also specializes in unlawful detainers. As the manager and head paralegal, I oversaw litigation support for each case from initial intake to settlement. I worked closely with attorneys and co-counsel on class action cases: obtained information from clients, prepared wage calculations, drafted legal documents including complaints and motions, propounded and responded to discovery, and assisted with preparation for depositions and mediations, under attorney supervision. I also reviewed, analyzed, and created summaries of large document productions in order to isolate and identify key information and documents. Another core task was to maintain the calendaring system for case-related hearing and deadlines. I also Independently assisted clients with landlord/tenant issues and unlawful detainers: drafted all notices, letters, and legal documents for unlawful detainer proceedings and work effectively and professionally with clients and the court clerks to provide superior results, under attorney supervision.
