About
An LTA licensed tennis coach for eight years, I have worked with a wide spectrum of ages and abilities in many social and cultural settings. I am extremely passionate about getting inactive people moving as I know first-hand how life enriching sport can be. Sport has given me so many opportunities in life both personally and professionally and I want to tackle inactivity as well as help reverse the terminal decline of tennis in the UK. My biggest achievement to date has been steering the progress of the Tennis in Nottingham project and building something from nothing. The project has now engaged over 5000 new people in tennis in the city with aspirations for a lot more. I enjoy working with beginners and giving them their first experiences of sport. I believe sport rather than the gym is the key to getting more people active in this country as playing sport is so much more fun than running on a treadmill or lifting weights. In turn we can work towards eliminating social problems, health problems and mental health problems by becoming more active as a nation.

Experience

regional tennis services assistant
lawn tennis association
I undertook an interim role providing business support for the LTA North team, based at David Lloyd in Leeds. This involved supporting the development of tennis in the North and helping make tennis accessible to more people. My key area of focus was marketing & communications and measurably increasing the visibility of tennis in the region. I managed the LTA North social media pages as well as generating media interest in tennis in the North. This involved researching, writing and distributing good news stories and press releases to specified local media partners via an online PR tool called Relevant Now. In addition to this I supported selected tennis clubs in Yorkshire & the North East to improve their business and increase their membership with bespoke action plans and support. This was coordinated with the club committee but included setting up websites and innovative online payment and booking systems as well as advising on the availability and criteria for funding of capital projects.

assistant tennis coach
carlisle city council
Bitts Park is a council run ClubMark facility which has also been awarded Beacon status in the UK – This recognizes authorities which have demonstrated excellence in a particular field. The park runs a full development and performance programme inclusive of all ages. I was primarily involved in junior and adult development and competition organizing, but also took an interest in the performance academy to enhance my ideas and knowledge as a coach. The council also had projects promoting tennis to different groups of people through its schools coaching and outreach programmes – through these schemes I have worked with pupils in local primary and secondary schools and youths in less affluent areas of the city. I enjoyed working with a broad spectrum of people and inspiring beginners to improve their game.

tennis coach and area manager of recruitment
usa sport group
The USA Sport Group is the forefront provider of multi-sports and sports specific camps for children aged 3-14 on the east coast of the USA. I went out as a tennis coach but was challenged to branch out into a variety of sports including soccer and baseball. By the end of my term I had been promoted to an Area Manager role which meant I undertook office duties as well as my coaching role. I was in the recruitment department so I was required to sift through suitable applications and conduct telephone interviews for future staff, as well as acting as human resources point of contact to existing staff.

eden lawn tennis club
Eden Lawn Tennis Club needed a coach to re-develop and revive the coaching programme and club structure for the 2009 summer season. This involved creating a fully inclusive weekly programme of coaching sessions, promoting the club and delivering the coaching itself.

part time assistant coach

Assisting Club Coaches with the delivery of Mini Tennis sessions and supporting them through coach absence and leave. I also ran a hitting session and regular Mini Tennis Parties for the club.

cumbria lta
Coordinating and Officiating various junior tournaments on behalf of Cumbria LTA, including a Mini Red League and the AEGON Team Tennis events.

csa customer advisor
post office
I have worked in various post offices including the main flagship branch in Leeds city centre and the WHSmith franchise in Carlisle, so I am accustomed to working in a very busy and challenging customer environment. The role required me to deliver excellent customer service as well as consistent results in the field of sales. I enjoyed the one to one customer interaction and always strove to exceed managerial and customer expectations.

community tennis officer
lawn tennis association
I am currently the Project Manager on a Sport England funded project in Nottingham which aims to get more people playing tennis especially those aged 14+ who may not have had the opportunity to play tennis before. So we are hitting the streets with our portable tennis kit and bringing tennis to new audiences in non-traditional areas such as community centres, youth groups, parks and games areas. As well as targeting new participants I am recruiting a small army of volunteer Tennis Activators and Tennis Champions to help us run our sessions and events and spread our message locally. I am also piloting sustainable methods of recruiting, training, supporting, recognising and rewarding these volunteers. The 2 year project has engaged with over 5000 people in Nottingham in it's first 15 months through a wide variety of initiatives such as club membership offers, community tennis sessions, REBO Walls and community events.
