Susan Johann

SUSAN JOHANN is a fine art photographer whose work is part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute. She has been seen in a solo show at Condeso/Lawler Gallery in New York City and at the John Stevenson Gallery in New York City. Other galleries across the country that have shown her work include Shaver-Melahn in Madison, Wisconsin, The Platinum Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Hemphill Fine Arts in Washington D.C. and The Michael Lord Gallery, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her photographs are included in private and corporate collections including Bolton-St.John’s, Solari Investment Advisory, and Marriott International. Her mural size portraits of playwrights are part of the Frank Gehry designed Signature Theatre Center on West 42nd St, New York Among her honors are the recent Best in Show 2010 for a Juried Exhibition at the Chapman Art Center Museum for the photograph “Winter Hydrangea”, Best in Photography Category, for “Sand Dollar and Shells”, for a Juried Exhibition at the Carolina Gallery, Spartanburg, South Carolina, a PDN Nikon Award, the Golden Pencil Award from the New York Art Directors Club. For the ongoing project, The Playwright Series, Johann is photographing the major playwrights of our time. In addition to the Smithsonian the photographs have been exhibited in New York at the Signature Theater,and at New York’s Public Theater. Johann is at work on a book of portraits and interviews with these playwrights. Among the one hundred photographed are Tom Stoppard, Arthur Miller, Edward Albee,August Wilson, Sarah Ruhl, Lynn Nottage, Tony Kushner and Suzan Lori Parks. Her portraits have been featured on the cover of The New York Times, Vogue and numerous book. Shooting Playwrights is a live multi-media presentation with the evolution of the series as the central theme. The performance has been presented at the New Dramatists, NYC, at the O'Neill Center for Playwrighting, the Tryon Fine Arts Series, North Carolina.
