Sumathi Angusamy

A Sumathi, is an industry veteran and a trailblazer, currently leading the Sterlite Copper as Chief Operating Officer. She is also serving as the Non-Executive Director in the Board of Electro Steel Limited & Board of Malco Energy Limited, which are under Vedanta's diverse natural resource portfolio. She is also part of Vedanta‘s top strategic leadership forums like HSE Council & HR Council, which are decision making bodies for the entire Vedanta group and she actively contributes towards implementation of best practices, through continuous industry benchmarking, with an objective to strengthen Vedanta's position as one of the most sustainable natural resource companies globally, with a greater purpose. Sumathi who started her career as an engineering graduate from NIT Trichy, possess an illustrious experience of more than 2 decades with skilled expertise in areas of operations, energy management, ESG, execution of strategic projects, business excellence and world-class maintenance practices, etc., While she held the role of Chief Sustainability Officer at Vedanta’s Copper division, she handled several improvement projects in the field of Environment, Sustainability & crucial Enviro - legal matters associated with the company. To leverage her vast knowledge & experience in the field of Environment, she was given the corporate responsibility as Global Head – Environment, Sustainability, Health & ESG Communication since October 2019, where she was instrumental in bringing in innovative best practices in Environment & Sustainability domain. She had been instrumental in facilitating the CII-ITC Sustainability Award Commendation Certificate and CII Best Environment Management Practices award for Vedanta’s group company in her personal capacity. While she handled Unit Head role at Malco Energy in 2015-16, she was honored with the Best Women’s Contribution in Power Sector Award at the India Energy Awards ceremony, New Delhi and in November 2019, she found her place in the list of top 50 managers of the country and was conferred “Great Managers Award” hosted by Economic Times. She was also nominated by Women in Mining, UK and included in the 2020 edition of the “100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining” (WIM100). Recently in March 2022, She was bestowed with the honorary title of “தாமிர பெண்மணி“- "Copper Woman" for her exemplary contribution to the Copper Industry for breaking the bias in metal and mining industry. Infact, she has been a voice and role model for diversity & inclusion @ Vedanta and mentors women employees across the group.
