Steve Wolpe
CSO @ Pathways Preclinical Partners, Inc.
About
Steve Wolpe did his undergraduate work at Amherst College, received his Ph.D. from Univ. of Penna. and did post-doctoral work at Population Council and Rockefeller University. At Rockefeller he discovered the chemokines MIP1alpha, MIP1beta and MIP2 and wrote a seminal review paper that helped define the chemokine family, a critical group of proteins involved in inflammation and a variety of diseases. He then joined Genetics Institute (now Pfizer) where he became the MIP1alpha project leader, investigating its effects on hematopoeitic stem cells. He later moved to Pro-Neuron Inc., now one of the Wellstat Companies (http://www.wellstat.com), where he continued his work on stem cells and also led research teams developing drugs for diabetes, inflammatory disease and cancer. The diabetes drug was licensed to Sanofi for $350MM. Steve also worked closely with the CEO of Wellstat, who also founded Amgen, Applied Biosystems and IGEN/BioVeris, on business development, IP assessment and licensing. Steve is an independent biotech consultant with a wide variety of technologies and companies in the US and internationally. He is Vice President of Preclinical at Khloris Biosciences, an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at BioHealth Innovation and a Contractor for the SEED Office at NIH. Specialties: Diabetes, immunology, inflammation, autoimmune disease, cancer and stem cells. Assessment of intellectual property and business development.

Wellstat Therapeutics
Wellstat Therapeutics is a privately-held biotechnology company. with a number of drugs, biologics and diagnostics in various stages of clincial development. Steve directed research programs in diabetes, inflammatory disease, cancer and stem cell biology and worked closely with the CEO on licensing, intellectual property and business development issues.

Director
Pro-Neuron Inc. (now Wellstat)
Pro-Neuron, Inc. is now Wellstat Therapeutics. Steve's lab served as a resource lab for all Wellstat companies.

Staff Scientist
Genetics Institute
Steve was a Scientist at Genetics Institute after finishing his post-doc at Rockefeller. While there he led the MIP1a project (published in Nature) and later started a project on intestinal stem cells. Genetics Institute is now part of Pfizer.

Postdoc
Rockefeller University
After finishing his work in Jennie Mather's lab at the Population Council (located at Rockefeller University) Steve moved to Tony Cerami's lab at Rockefeller. At the time, the Cerami lab was cloning cachectin, which turned out to be TNF. Steve made the first monoclonal to TNF, which was used to demonstrate the role of TNF in sepsis. Steve later isolated MIP1a, MIP1b and MIP2 using a heparin column. These proteins are members of the chemokine family and Steve wrote a seminal review in FASEB J. establishing this superfamiily of inflammatory mediators.

Postdoctoral Fellow
Population Council
Steve worked in Jennie Mather's lab, studying the interactions between Sertoli and myoid cells and developed some monoclonal antibodies that affected their interactions. He also discovered a population of macrophages in the seminiferous tubules that vary with the stage of spermatogenesis.
