Steven Lau-Rivera
Director of Research Development @ NeoGenomics Laboratories
About
With over 15 years of experience in biotechnology and a PhD in Pathology/Experimental Pathology from UCLA, I am the Director of Research Development at NeoGenomics, a leading provider of cancer testing and information services. In this role, I lead and manage a team of scientists and technicians who develop and validate novel assays and technologies for cancer diagnosis and prognosis, using next-generation sequencing (NGS) and other molecular platforms. I am passionate about advancing the science and practice of precision medicine and improving the lives of cancer patients. I collaborate with academic, clinical, and industry partners to translate cutting-edge research into innovative and effective solutions. I have successfully launched multiple laboratory-developed tests (LDTs) for oncology and hematology, including a complete genomic profile product, a gene fusion detection assay, and a Covid-19 real-time assay under EUA. I am also committed to fostering a culture of excellence, creativity, and diversity within my team and organization.

Experience

Director of Research Development
United States
Team lead/manager for clinical Oncology/Hematological LDT assays of many types including NGS. Most recently an NGS based Complete Genomic Profile product developed and validated on the Illumina NovaSeq 6000. WES and a novel solid tumor LDT gene fusion detection assay are two others. Team lead/manager for “off the shelf” clinical Oncology/Hematological assays as well such as MSI and also Covid-19 real-time assay under EUA, Covid-19 IgG serology under EUA. Management of vendor and strategic partnerships intra and extramurally to support product development. Intramural presentation of scientific and specific technical principles incorporated into diagnostic testing to various levels of staff.

I was team lead for Quest Diagnostics second and third NGS assays: a capture-based assay for BRAC1/2 and an amplicon-based assay for mutations in the CFTR gene. I developed an LDT for prostate cancer using gene promoter methylation as the key biomarker. I was team co-lead on a solid tumor assay by NGS. Additionally, I developed numerous LDT assays in various molecular disciplines as well as validated numerous off the shelf assays.
