Somya Jain
Product Engineer @ Whirlpool Corporation
About
I'm a Mechanical Engineer and recent Purdue University graduate with hands-on experience in product design, EV systems, and human-centered innovation. With internship experience at Tesla and ZF Group, I bring a strong foundation in CAD, product development, and cross-functional engineering collaboration. At Tesla, I contributed to the Cybertruck interior systems team, leading design iterations, optimizing fit and cost, and driving part validation through New Product Introduction trials. This experience sharpened my ability to deliver real-world solutions in fast-paced, high-impact environments. As a project lead within Purdue's EPICS program, I led the development of an assistive music tuner for students with visual impairments, applying systems thinking, audio engineering, and Arduino programming to create inclusive tech that makes music more accessible. I’ve also collaborated with the Purdue Electric Racing Team, supporting vehicle dynamics design for electric vehicles.

Experience

Product Engineer
Wisconsin, United States
• Designed critical components including baffles, gaskets, and LED housing for commercial food waste disposers. • Managed engineering change actions and drawing deviations for CAD models, assemblies, and released designs, ensuring alignment with product standards and manufacturability. • Partnered with manufacturing and quality teams to resolve non-conformances and maintained production flow.

Interior Engineering Intern
Austin, Texas, United States
• Diagnosed and resolved form, fit, and function issues on Cybertruck interior parts, improving build quality. • Collaborated with NPI, supply chain, and quality teams to validate design changes for production. • Supported line-side trials and build by validating components and solving complex integration issues. • Created deviations and engineering change actions involving 3D CAD, materials, and cost-saves changes. • Led design and implementation of a new Cybertruck part, improving fit and function, reducing cost by $16 through strategic supplier alignment.

Ambassador
West Lafayette, Indiana, United States
• Assisted in helping spread the EPICS program through campus-wide student recruitment activities including classroom presentations. • Facilitated alumni and industry events by coordinating campus visits and creating opportunities for students.

Design Lead
West Lafayette, Indiana, United States
• Constructed a Tuner using Fusion360 and Arduino to impact 30+ students in the band at Indiana School of the Blind and Visually Impaired in music classes throughout their middle and high school experience. • Led the team through the Human-Centered Design Process, creating Gantt charts and project plans. • Problem-solved and applied electrical skills to improve PCB (Printed Circuit Board) design increasing the accuracy of audio detection by 60% with tight deadlines.

Mechanical Engineering Co-op
United States
• Developed Power BI based dashboard to visualize lab data, speed up, and streamline analysis. • Improved lab fixtures and drawing across NX and CATIA to clarify technical documentation and update designs. • Presented technical part performance reports on durability, lifecycle, and technical findings to stakeholders.

Vehicle Dynamics Team Member
Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana
• Designed suspension and steering parts for an electric race car using Solidworks, ensuring precise integration. • Enhanced the assembly of chassis by using CAD skills with accurate calibration of components.

Outreach Team Member
Purdue Women in Engineering Outreach Team
Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana
• Volunteered and Formed connections with middle and high school students to familiarize them with engineering programs. • Performed interactive activities to give students opportunities to discover and explore their inner engineers. • Built knowledge of technical skills and experiences relevant to developing an Engineering career.

Undergraduate Research Assistant
Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana
• Designed a compressor by adding layered shell cavities to mask and reduce noise and vibration. • Tested compressors under a range of pressure conditions with varied increments of sizes and thicknesses to reduce NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness). • Collected data using LabView to analyze the pressure, temperature, and power of the simulation.
