Sea ice is one of the most hostile habitats on the earth for marine life, with extremely cold temperature ranging from-1.8°C to -20°C, and salinities ranging from 35 to 212 PSU. In order to survive psychrophilic microbes manipulate their environment by producing micro-gels during ice formation. My main research interests are mainly focused on sea ice biochemistry, distribution and chemical characterisation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in sea-ice, and the widespread importance of these micro-gels to the frozen realms of the world’s oceans. I am also interested in the characteristics and functions of marine microbial communities and factors that influence their community composition, diversity and structure.
