About
Shawn Coss is an Ohio-based dark artist, entrepreneur, and former nurse whose work has redefined the intersection of mental health and visual storytelling. Best known for his hauntingly expressive series It's All In Your Head, Coss has gained international recognition for illustrating the raw, often invisible struggles of mental illness through surreal and emotionally charged imagery. In 2016, Coss launched Inktober Illness, a 31-piece series created for the annual Inktober challenge. This project marked a pivotal shift in his career, transitioning from his earlier work with the webcomic Cyanide & Happiness to a more introspective and socially conscious focus. The series evolved into the acclaimed It's All In Your Head collection, which has expanded across multiple volumes, including the recently released Final Dose Edition. These works have resonated deeply with audiences, sparking conversations about mental health and finding homes in clinics, classrooms, and personal collections worldwide . Coss's distinctive style caught the attention of the rock band Seether, leading to a creative partnership that has spanned several album cycles. He designed the cover art for the band's 2017 album Poison the Parish, the 2020 release Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum, and the 2024 album The Surface Seems So Far. His artwork has become integral to Seether's visual identity, complementing the band's themes of emotional intensity and introspection . Before fully dedicating himself to art, Coss worked as an ER nurse. This experience provided him with a profound understanding of human vulnerability, which deeply informs his artistic exploration of psychological and emotional themes. In recent years, he made the significant decision to leave nursing and focus entirely on his art and entrepreneurial ventures, a move he describes as both challenging and rewarding . Coss is also the co-founder and creative force behind Any Means Necessary, a lifestyle brand based in Ohio. The brand aims to empower individuals by embracing flaws and promoting authenticity, aligning closely with Coss's artistic mission to give a voice to those who feel unheard . Through his evocative art and commitment to mental health advocacy, Shawn Coss continues to challenge societal stigmas and inspire individuals to confront and embrace their inner struggles.
