About

Passionate Mechanical Engineer | Well versed in composites, analysis, design for manufacturing, and machining Hello! I am Shane Spangler, a mechanical engineer with 4 years of hands-on experience in the entire process of creating physical components, from initial design to analysis and manufacturing. My work within the Solar Vehicle Project involved a mix of using Creo and Solidworks for design, ANSYS and Altair Hypermesh for analysis, and manufacturing techniques such as composite production, 3 Axis CNC machining, and thermoforming plastics. These skills contributed to our team securing a proud 2nd place finish in the prestigious World Solar Challenge held in Australia. My expertise spans hard and surface modeling, as well as aerodynamic and structural analysis of composite and isotropic materials. I've developed proficiency in various manufacturing techniques such as composite layups, CNC machining, and utilizing 3D printing and vacuum forming. I cultivated these skills during my time at the Solar Vehicle Project and while mentoring students as a machine shop supervisor. During my tenure at the Solar Vehicle Project, I spearheaded the creation of a carbon fiber composite chassis, marking a milestone by producing the team's safest chassis in over a decade. Additionally, I innovated a four-bar door hinge mechanism that led to the team's most functional door to date. Moreover, I secured sponsorship from 5 corporate entities, resulting in a substantial $20,000 savings, equating to 7% of the team's overall budget. I flourish in collaborative settings that allow individuals to work autonomously, excelling particularly in guiding projects from inception to completion. Beyond my professional endeavors, I am passionate about climate change. I believe it is the #1 issue today, and I want to do everything in my power to help reduce it. • Fully designed, tested, analyzed, and manufactured a carbon fiber composite chassis after implementing new analysis and testing techniques resulting in the safest chassis the team has made for 10+ years while being on-par with weight. • Surface modeled a practical and desirable car body concept with SolidWorks, ANSYS Fluent, and Altair Hypermesh CFD with a CD of 0.12 and CDA of 0.21 in only 45 revisions when the previous vehicle took 100+ revisions to get to this point. • Developed and analyzed a four-bar door hinge mechanism with Creo and ANSYS resulting in the most operable door the team has ever made by eliminating sag. Manufactured components with a waterjet, manual mill, and CNC 3 axis mill. • Led carbon fiber and fiberglass composite layups from mold creation to performing layups on molds from 1 meter to 5 meters long. • Designed and manufactured ducts and headlights with 3D scanning and thermoforming processes such as 3D printing and vacuum forming resulting in sufficiently bright lights and keeping the batteries cool. • Advised and collaborated with 10+ team members while coordinating with 5 corporate sponsors resulting in the team saving $20,000 or 7% of the budget. • Competed in the World Solar Challenge in Australia with the team taking 2nd place for the first time in the team’s history, also resulting in the team receiving the inaugural Eberle-Selwood Championship Arrow Cup.

In the XYZ Lab, I helped art students create their projects using the lab's laser cutters, 3D printers, and CNC router. I advised them on how to best make their files so they could be manufacturable, and taught them how to use the software as well. I also managed the inventory, and created a C++ program that calculated the cost of the machines along with tax in order to avoid charging the student incorrectly.

I worked at docks on wheels in my summer between my high school graduation and my freshman year of college. There I began installing the wooden decks of the docks where I exercised my woodworking skills. Partway through, I noticed we were short on welders so I stepped in as another welder so we could get the docks done faster. For the rest of the summer, my position was as a welder where I used a MIG welder to manufacture straight and square docks to the customer's specifications, as well as checking over my colleague's work. Two weeks after I had started as a welder, my boss gave me a raise for my work ethic, as the shop was always more productive when I was present. On occasion, I helped install the docks which required me to drive a backhoe, secure a 50' long dock to a trailer and haul it on the highway, and operate a boat.

As an equipment manager, I greeted customers and showed them how to use the canoes, equipment, and food for their trip into the Boundary Waters. I also would clean, sort, and pack the equipment that the customers brought into the wilderness, as well as cleaned the cabins they stayed in. During my time there, I also took on the role of managing the other employees, their daily tasks, and schedule as I was the most mature one there even though I was the youngest. I also connected really well with some of the employees there and we spent some time together outside of work.
