As our Earth becomes increasingly urban, cities and their inhabitants must foster a more sustainable stewardship of the planet’s natural resources. To realize this vision, my overall professional goal is to create opportunities and avenues that will help steer the current trajectory of urbanization onto a resource-efficient pathway. Specifically, I develop smart technologies through cross-disciplinary efforts, to improve the sustainability and liveability of urban landscapes. This includes the test-bedding of various technologies ranging from water and energy saving innovations, to reducing carbon footprint for tropical megacities.

THESIS: Synthesis, characterization and evaluation of novel graphene-based materials for post-combustion carbon capture ADVISOR: Prof. Rajasekhar BALASUBRAMANIAN SYNOPSIS: With the current high consumption of fossil fuels and the expected further increase in their demand in the foreseeable future, the capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) from flue gases emanating from post-combustion power plants is critically important from the climate change mitigation viewpoint. Among the various adsorbents explored by the scientific community for selective CO2 capture, graphene and its derivatives, such as graphene oxide (GO), are receiving increased attention because of their unique molecular structure and many exciting properties. This doctoral thesis focused on studying the tunable surface chemistry of graphene/GO and their macroscopic assemblies and/or hybrids as well as optimizing their functional characteristics for post-combustion CO2 capture applications.
