Shahab Ramhormozian
Associate Professor in Structural and Earthquake Engineering @ Auckland University of Technology
About
Shahab obtained his BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering and MSc in Structural Engineering, both with highest distinction, in Iran, before coming to NZ, where he obtained his PhD in Structural and Earthquake Engineering. He joined AUT in 2017, where he developed advanced structural and earthquake Eng papers, all of which were part of the successful accreditation assessment of AUT by Engineering NZ. He has been heavily involved in developing the new AUT labs for structural and earthquake engineering experiments. He is the Academic Health and Safety lead of these labs. Shahab obtained his PhD from the UoA, where he was also widely involved in research, teaching, and supervision for several years. His PhD was on the Sliding Hinge joint (SHJ), a successful and widely used low damage seismic resisting system for multi-storey buildings initially developed by his PhD supervisor and ongoing mentor, AP Charles Clifton. Shahab’s PhD shifted the SHJ to a no-damage system through a practical and cost effective solution to be widely implemented in practice. His PhD was nominated by the UoA CEE Dept to be the recipient of the UoA 2018 best PhD Thesis VC award. Part of Shahab’s PhD research proposed additions and changes to three Australia and New Zealand Steel Structures Standards (NZS3404, AS/NZS1252, and AS/NZS 5131) which were then implemented in the latter two 2016 editions. Shahab has presented his research, by invitation, in several countries, has published several journal and conference papers in the field of structural and earthquake engineering, and is the reviewer, by invitation, for the most prestigious international journals in the field. He has a close collaboration with key researchers in the field both nationally and internationally. He has won several national and international prestigious awards and grants from different organizations.
