Early clinical development - Immuno-oncology

Practicing hematologist / medical oncologist and principal investigator on multiple clinical trials.

As the Chief Fellow served as a senior-level fellow assigned administrative duties related to the training program that are in addition to usual clinical and research fellow duties. These responsibilities included: Provided leadership at the fellow level. Served as liaison between the hematology & medical oncology fellows and the fellowship program director and division director. Attended divisional faculty meetings to represent fellow interests and to discuss issues and changes in the fellowship program. Prepared the yearly call and rotation schedules in conjunction with the fellowship program director. This will include coordinating requests for vacation and meetings, as well as approving and arranging schedule modifications throughout the year. Arranged rotation and call coverage for unplanned absences. Served as the first point of contact for fellow problems. Assisted with supervision of junior fellows. Assisted the program director with developing an orientation schedule for new fellows, including the July/August introductory lecture series. Assisted the program director with updating core curriculum and ensuring all elements covered on a rotating basis. Assisted with the selection of new fellows (recruiting, screening applications, interview process). Participate in appropriate GME meetings with the Internal Medicine department. Responsible, in conjunction with the program director, for fellow compliance with call schedule and other fellowship duties. Help coordinate conferences requiring direct fellow participation/presentation including board review conference series.

Comprehensive training in clinical practice, clinical investigation, and laboratory science in an ACGME accredited fellowship program. Included rotations at Montefiore Medical Center, and Jacobi Medical Center. Under the guidance of a staff of 48 hematology and oncology faculty members, including clinicians, scientists, and research scientists. As a fellow, received a thorough education in benign and malignant hematology, oncology, immunology and bone marrow transplantation. Responsible for consultations and ongoing care of inpatients and outpatients. Because fellows served a population of more than 1.6 million residents in the New York Metropolitan area, I was exposed to diverse cultures and a broad spectrum of hematologic and oncologic disorders. Considered multi-tiered diagnoses, ranging from various rare carcinomas to sickle cell disease. Performed various types of hematopoietic stem cell transplants; performed oncological gynecologic consults, hematological obstetric evaluations and saw solid tumor and oncologic/hematologic solid organ/ hematopoietic stem transplant related complications. My fellowship experience was constructed with a stronger emphasis on clinical hematology and oncology research. Working closely with one of our clinical investigators, fellows receive formal instruction on creating, executing, and interpreting clinical trials pertaining to thrombosis, hemoglobinopathy, hematological malignancies, Hematopoietic stem cells, and phase 1 studies, breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and lung malignancies. Participated in numerous unique educational and research opportunities, such as participating in twice a month research conferences as well as disease specific tumor boards. A formal curriculum dealing with ethical, medicolegal, and socioeconomic issues was also an integral part of the program.
